This week's Google Doodle celebrates Charlie Hill's 71st birthday

a Native American actor and standup comedian who challenged racial

stereotypes and fought oppression. Hill was born in 1951

in Detroit and moved to the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin

reservation at 11. Watching TV shows featuring Dick Gregory,

a Black satirist who used his humor to bring attention

to social injustice, Hill fell in love with comedy.

Hill majored in speech and drama at the  University of

Wisconsin-Madison before joining the New York theater scene and ultimately

moving to Los Angeles. The Richard Pryor Show, a short-lived

sketch comedy show hosted by the Black comedian who used

humor to break down racial barriers, gave him his big break in 1977
